【A-PAD Indonesia】 Six Months Since West Java Earthquake

2023.04.19

On November 21, 2022, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck West Java inflicting significant casualties. Though six months have passed, there are still many affected areas that have not been reached.

Immediately after the disaster struck, A-PAD Indonesia began working with a partner organization to provide relief activities. Since February of this year, with support from the Jakarta Japan Club, A-PAD has been supporting four villages in Cianjur in the areas of water and sanitation, employment support, and temporary housing construction.

Safe Drinking Water through Rehabilitation of Pipes and Water Tanks

Many areas have been experiencing water outages since the earthquake and the residents have been struggling to access safe drinking water. With no choice but to use unsanitary water, many cases of waterborne diseases have been reported in the affected areas. A-PAD Indonesia provided high-quality pipes and water storage tanks to help deliver clean water from springs and groundwater. At the same time, A-PAD installed “MCK,” a multi-functional facility used for bathing, laundry, and toilets.

One village with 2,093 households (population 8,029) used to use underground water until the earthquake disrupted the water source. With A-PAD’s assistance, they now have clean water for the first time since the earthquake.

Supporting Residents Looking to Return to Work

A-PAD is also supporting long-term livelihoods through employment support – providing rice and vegetables to restaurant owners, seeds and fertilizers for farmers, and goats for dairy farmers. Some have already become profitable with the support received.

Construction of Temporary Housing

A-PAD Indonesia also supported the construction of temporary housing by procuring construction materials. As residents are expected to live in temporary housing for at least one to two years, it is imperative to secure a strong and durable living space.
