【A-PAD Philippines】 Mayon Volcano Eruption Field Assessments
2026.05.18
On May 2, 2026, Mount Mayon, located in the southern part of Luzon Island, Philippines, erupted. Since then, highly active volcanic activity including ash plumes and pyroclastic flows has been continuously observed, significantly increasing the likelihood of a further hazardous eruption.
In response, on May 9 – 10, A-PAD Philippines conducted assessments with local volunteers to gather firsthand information on the situation and immediate needs of the affected communities.

In the communities of Guinobatan, Camalig, and Daraga, the ongoing threat of volcanic eruptions has been severely compounded by extreme heat waves and water shortages. The affected population has surpassed 11,000 and 1,903 farming households have suffered catastrophic losses to their rice crops, high-value crops and livestock, forcing them to start from scratch. With their primary sources of food and income entirely wiped out, these families are now forced to rebuild their livelihoods completely from scratch.
Immediate needs include sustainable water supply systems, regionally tailored livelihood support, and aid to communities remaining outside designated shelters. In response to the escalating situation, a network of partner organizations is actively executing relief operations across Albay Province. Local stakeholders including Bicol University, the local Chamber of Commerce, and various non-governmental organizations are working in close coordination to install vital water filtration systems in affected areas. Additionally, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has launched a widespread initiative calling for broader regional support.
A volunteer team from the Bicol region is spearheading an awareness campaign to secure financial donations and essential relief goods. Also, on May 23, 2026, A-PAD Philippines volunteers are scheduled to launch fundraising campaigns, alongside providing psychosocial support and distributing school supplies to children staying in the evacuation shelters.
