【A-PAD Korea】Community-Based Support Delivered to Affected Areas

On March 21, 2025, southeastern South Korea was devastated by a large-scale wildfire. After days of relentless firefighting efforts and much-needed rainfall, the fire was finally brought under control on March 30. What began in Sancheong, South Gyeongsang Province, quickly escalated as multiple fires broke out in succession, forcing the evacuation of over 37,000 people and tragically claiming 30 lives, including three firefighters.
The wildfires scorched approximately 48,000 hectares of land and destroyed more than 3,300 homes. Cultural heritage sites were also impacted, including Gounsa Temple, a historic Buddhist temple with a history spanning more than 1,300 years.

In response, A-PAD Korea was among the first organizations to send relief teams to the affected areas. Our initial focus was on supporting vulnerable populations—especially the elderly, residents in isolated villages, and those working on the front lines. We distributed hygiene kits, clothing, work socks, underwear, and other essentials to firefighters and local officials who had been working tirelessly for days.

In areas where designated evacuation shelters were unavailable, A-PAD provided hot meals and daily necessities. We partnered with local organizations to distribute bath coupons to disaster survivors, helping restore comfort and dignity during a time of great hardship. Fresh fruit was also provided to firefighters and rescue personnel, offering a small but meaningful boost to their energy and morale.

To support evacuees who had fled with nothing but the clothes on their backs, A-PAD Korea launched the “Mobile General Store”, a mobile support service that delivers daily essentials directly to evacuation centers, shelters, and temporary housing. By sourcing supplies from local markets, we also supported the regional economy. Through this initiative, we were able to assist more than 850 evacuees.
