On November 8, Typhoon Haiyan one of the most powerful typhoons on record, ripped through central Philippines and made landfall 6 times, bringing devastating winds and storm surges that uprooted trees, wiped off buildings and houses near the sea, crumpled tin roofs and upturned cars.

The typhoon left cities and towns in ruins, leaving people with no power and communication lines. Thousands of families living in risk areas have evacuated ahead of time. However, even evacuation centers were deluged by the strong winds and flash floods, leaving several people injured or dead.

At least 255 people were confirmed dead as of Sunday evening, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said. The International Committee of the Red Cross believes this number could go as high as 10,000.

Due to the magnitude of the disaster, Alliance member Citizens’ Disaster Response Center has begun its response and is currently assessing damage and needs on the ground. They have also released an appeal for support. Affected families are in need of food, water, medicine, shelter kits, sleeping kits and hygiene kits.
