【Nepal】 Flash Floods – Needs Assessments Ongoing and Medical Assistance to be Deployed

2026.08.28

More than 1,400 people are still missing from the recent flash floods that struck Nepal and China and the death toll has risen to 469.

The Nepalese government and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Agency (NDRRMA) are leading the rescue operations and emergency assistance, and they have also asked China and India for support. Land access is severely restricted due to the complete destruction of major roads and the Raswagadi border. Air support using helicopters and the deployment of stockpiled relief supplies are currently underway.

Needs Assessment Underway

A-PAD team arrived in Kathmandu on August 27 and began assessments including in the heavily impacted Nuwakot district on August 28.

According to the team on the ground, the disaster area has suffered catastrophic damage, with the town buried under massive amounts of mud, dirt, and debris. Beyond just securing safety, rebuilding housing and basic infrastructure will require a comprehensive recovery process, and returning to the original state is expected to take extensive time.

Preparation for Medical Assistance Begins

In parallel, A-PAD Bangladesh is preparing medical assistance. A team consisting of one doctor and two staff members will be deployed on August 29, with plans to begin immediate emergency relief operations upon arrival.

Working in partnership with local organizations in Nepal and the Bangladesh team, A-PAD is committed to save as many lives as quickly as possible.
