A magnitude 7.7 earthquake centered in central Myanmar struck on the afternoon of March 28, 2025 (Japan Standard Time). Significant damage has been reported in the second largest city, Mandalay, and the capital, Naypyidaw. The military has reported that the death toll has reached 1,644 by the 29th, but the full extent of the damage is unclear due to road and communication blockages. A-PAD began gathering information immediately after the disaster and has initiated emergency relief efforts in collaboration with their Turkish NGO partner, GEA, which deployed to Myanmar via Thailand on March 29.

GEA has been involved in rescue and disaster relief activities iboth domestically and internationally since its establishment in 1994, and is registered with the United Nations International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).

A-PAD and GEA signed a disaster cooperation agreement in 2016 and have since collaborated on projects such as the Pandemic Kit Project (delivering hygiene kits to affected areas) and in disaster training. For this earthquake, GEA’s urban rescue team has entered the affected area, and A-PAD Director Filzan Hashim is responsible for coordination, including liaising with the United Nations.

The team plans to enter the affected areas and begin search and rescue operations.

A-PAD is now accepting donations here. Thank you for your support.
