【A-PAD】 The Japan Foundation’s Disaster Preparedness Education Program

2025.01.15

In disaster-prone Indonesia, knowledge of preparedness and mitigation is important for everyone. A-PAD has been working with the Japan Foundation/NIHONGO Partners‘ “Japanese Language Education x Disaster Preparedness” initiative since 2024, sharing with NIHONGO Partners its experiences with disaster preparedness events in Japan and materials used in lectures and courses.

A-PAD received a field report from our Japanese Language Partners about the initiative implemented on November 24, 2024.

On November 24, 2024, the Bali Provincial High School Japanese Language Teachers Association (MGMP) held a Japanese culture introduction event at North Kuta First National High School in Bali, Indonesia.

MGMP was formed by Japanese language teachers active in Bali, including Japanese language experts from the Japan Foundation and lecturers from the Jakarta Japan Cultural Center. MGMP holds study groups and training sessions in various locations. About 20 Indonesian teachers who teach Japanese in Bali and the Nihongo Partners participated in the event. They introduced Japan’s experience with disasters and disaster preparedness including the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, evacuation drills by local governments and schools, and food stockpiling.

In addition, participants played a “Disaster Preparedness Bingo” game, touching on past disasters in Indonesia. In the game, players were asked to select items from a disaster goods list and fill in the boxes marked “Must include,” “If possible,” and “Maybe”. When participants got bingo, they were asked to share why they thought that way.

The participating teachers provided positive comments that they wanted to teach this to their students in high school.

A-PAD will continue to cooperate in various initiatives to convey the importance of self-help and mutual aid, so that the circle of learning between Japan and Indonesia can expand.
