Two workshops were held on July 25 and 26 in Banten Province, Indonesia.

Damage Assessment Tool “DALA Handbook”

A workshop on DALA Handbook (DALA: Damage and Loss Assessment), a disaster assessment tool for civil society organizations (CSO) developed by A-PAD Indonesia, was held on July 25 at the Banten Provincial Disaster Management Office. 40 people from Banten Province’s NGOs and CSO organizations gathered. 

At the workshop, A-PAD explained the purpose and how to utilize DALA, and also introduced the damage assessment method (JITUPASNA) developed by the Banten Provincial Disaster Management Agency and the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency. A-PAD emphasized that while the DALA Handbook follows the basic structure of JITUPASNA, it is an easy-to-use damage assessment method that meets the needs of organizations and groups engaged in support activities in the field. Participants with extensive experience in emergency support commented that they would like to adopt this method immediately as a post-disaster evaluation method.’

Learning from the past disasters, utilizing the “Hotel Disaster Preparedness Certification System” 

In Banten Province, which has many tourist spots, the tourism industry and the local community are working together to strengthen disaster preparedness. As part of this effort, A-PAD Indonesia held a workshop on July 26 focusing on the theme “Disseminating a resilient tourism disaster preparedness model.” 28 people gathered from Banten Provincial Disaster Management Office, Banten Provincial Tourism Office, Pandeglang Provincial Disaster Management Office, Hotel and Restaurant Association, Indonesian Tourism Association, and hotels in Tanjung Lusun area.

The workshop aimed to widely disseminate the “Hotel Disaster Preparedness Certification” and for all parties, including participants, to understand and establish the certification program as a minimum standard tool for disaster preparedness.

At the workshop, A-PAD Indonesia staff explained how to leverage the “Hotel Disaster Preparedness Certification.” Staff reflected on the tsunami that occurred in the Sunda Strait in 2018 and emphasized the need to utilize the certification system. Many of the participants clearly remembered their experiences at the time, and the Banten Provincial Hotel and Restaurant Association shared, “This system is particularly needed in the hard-hit Tanjung Lusun area.” The Pandeglang Provincial Disaster Management Bureau expressed its enthusiasm saying, “We are ready to provide support for hotels to carry out disaster management training.”
