2022.08.26
On August 3, 2022, a devastating flood along the Kosi River, one of the three largest rivers in Nepal, forced 1,800 households to flee their homes and 4,300 households have been affected. A-PAD’s liaison office in Nepal and its local partner, Sankalpa CBR (Community Based Rehabilitation) worked together and provided emergency relief assistance in Sunsasri and Udaipur.
Sankalpa CBR is a local NGO working in the poverty, discrimination reduction, and education sectors as well as natural disaster emergency assistance.
A-PAD and Sankalpa CBR distributed rice, beans, sugar, salt, oil, turmeric, and mosquito nets to 176 households.
Residents who received the assistance said:
“All grocery stores were damaged by the flood and we do not have enough food. We appreciate the food we received.” – Anita Devi Urawa, Sunsari
“The Kosi River floods frequently and it is very scary. Your assistance is helping us survive for the next few days. Thank you.” – Himal Rai, Sunsari
“We had no information on an evacuation order. A lot of residents fled without taking any food or belongings and I have nothing right now. Thank you so much for your help.” – Sita Sherpa, Udayapur
“Simple assistance is meaningful in emergencies. We lost everything in the flood. Relief items received from Sankalp CBR, A-PAD, and the local government have become essential to our survival.” – Arjun Rai, Udayapur
Two local newspapers featured A-PAD’s emergency assistance.
