A-PAD’s Executive Director, Kaori Neki (pictured right), visited the Embassy of Tonga in Tokyo to discuss the damage from the recent volcanic eruption and scope of assistance.
Tonga has numerous remote islands and communication has been a challenge. The full extent of the damage has not yet been determined, however, Mango Island has been hit the hardest. Houses, along with household items, have been lost and the island is now unrecognizable. The local residents waited for rescue all night after the eruption and were evacuated to a nearby island with support from the government.

Affected islands are facing acute water shortage and many countries have begun to offer assistance. With much destruction to overcome, mid to long-term assistance will also be needed.
A-PAD is planning on disaster recovery assistance activities with a local chamber of commerce. The team is also exploring alternative safe drinking water options and relief item transportation from a nearby country.
Embassy staff commented, “We are grateful to receive assistance for areas where the authorities may not be able to easily reach. On behalf of the government and the people of Tonga, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for the support of the Japanese people.”
