Handover of Educational Flyers and Posters on Heat-Wave Precautions at the Disaster Management Centre
2016.05.17
Despite the unprecedented torrential rains which have inundated much of the country within the span of a couple of days, Sri Lanka was, for most of the first quarter of 2016, oppressed by a heat-wave which is expected to continue once the rainstorm passes within the next few days.
With health officials warning the general public of possible heat-stroke (10-15 cases were being reported daily in the Jaffna region), and the imminent threat of more serious long-term harm to health, educating the public became of paramount importance. Bearing these statistics in mind, A-PAD SL initiated the designing and printing of educational flyers and posters for dissemination in schools and affected communities across the island.
Handover of the printed material to the Director General of the DMC, Major General L B R Mark, took place on the 17th of May at the DMC premises in the Ministry of Disaster Management. Ms Anoja Senevriatne, Director, Mitigation, Research and Development was also present representing the DMC whereas Dr Iizuka Akiko, representative for A-PAD Japan and Mr Firzan Hashim, Deputy Executive Director of the Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies were in attendance, representing the A-PAD.
