【A-PAD Sri Lanka】 A-PAD Search & Rescue Team Conducts Lifeboat Training

2026.02.25

On February 4, 2026. A-PAD Sri Lanka Search-and-Rescue (SAR) team conducted autonomous training at Mount Lavinia Beach in Colombo. Utilizing inflatable rescue boats (IRB), the session focused on strengthening water rescue capabilities and on-site response proficiency.

The training covered essential technical skills, including IRB maneuvering, outboard motor inspection, and troubleshooting. Through drills involving boat assembly, recovery, and victim approach techniques, the team reinforced practical skills and communication protocols for emergency scenarios.

In a simulation mirroring actual flood conditions, the team prioritized safety through rigorous equipment checks and pre-deployment risk assessments, ensuring all members were correctly equipped with life jackets and essential gear. This exercise served as a reminder of the importance of preparation in high-pressure environments.

Since its inception in 2017, the A-PAD Sri Lanka SAR team has committed to specialized training in water and rope rescue. To date, 160 members have earned SAR certifications. These dedicated individuals represent both the public and private sectors, balancing their professional careers with their roles as first responders. Their impact was notably demonstrated during Cyclone Ditwa, where the team conducted a four-day rescue operation in Biyagama, Western Province, successfully saving 21 people, including children.

This training was conducted as part of the project, “Strengthening Collaborative Response Mechanisms and Partnerships for Climate-Resilient Communities,” supported by the Government of Japan.

As climate change continues to escalate disaster risks, A-PAD Sri Lanka remains dedicated to deepening partnerships between the government, private sector, and civil society. These efforts aim to enhance disaster resilience not only within Sri Lanka but across the broader Asia-Pacific region.
