【A-PAD Indonesia】Water Distribution Begins in Affected Area by the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Eruption

On October 25, to support the disaster-affected areas following the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, A-PAD Indonesia conducted assessments and began distributing clean water.

Latest Information from Lewotobi District
- Total Evacuees: 7,959 people (1,777 households)
- Water and Sanitation: A-PAD Indonesia distributed 10,000 liters of clean water on October 29 and 25,000 liters on October 30.

- *The current water supply only meets 60-70% of the minimum Sphere standard (15 liters/person/day) for the 3,277 residents at the HUNTARA site.
- *Lack of Sanitation Facilities: Communal toilets are shared by dozens of residents, and there is a lack of hand-washing facilities and waste disposal systems.
- *Health Risks: As the rainy season approaches, health problems related to poor sanitation are being reported, including Acute Respiratory Infections (ISPA), gastritis, and dermatitis.
Immediate Priorities:
- *Increase water trucks and add 25 units of 2,300-liter tanks.
- *Install separate toilets and bathing facilities for men and women.
- *Develop drainage channels and establish waste collection points.
Evacuation Facilities and Housing Support:
- Temporary Shelters (HUNTARA): 3,277 people (890 households) are residing.
- – Location: Three temporary housing sites (HUNTARA I-III) in Konga Village, approximately 15km from the disaster area.
- – Evacuees from Hokeng Jaya, Kuratanlo, Bor, and Nawokoten villages.
- – Lack of clean water, sanitation facilities, and private space.
- Temporary Camps (Poslap)
- – 2,836 people (746 households) are living in tents.
- – This group continues to rely on humanitarian aid, especially for clean water and food supply.
- – Some families have begun small livelihood activities to regain self-reliance.
- Transitional Shelter Support (DTH)
- – 1,846 people (641 households) are eligible.
- – They have been certified as beneficiaries for permanent housing support and are staying in temporary accommodation during the construction period.
Education:
- *Assessments at Wulang Gitang Junior High School, Wolorona Elementary School, and Inpres Nobo Elementary School revealed extensive infrastructure damage. Teachers have also evacuated and classes are held in temporary shelters.
- *Urgent Needs:
- – Construction of additional alternative classrooms to replace damaged facilities.
- – Teaching materials, including textbooks, stationery, and whiteboards.
- – Installation of appropriate toilets and hand-washing facilities at schools.
- – Commuting support for teachers.
Humanitarian Aid Status:
- *Government: The Indonesian government (BNPB and BPBD) is leading the emergency response, establishing three evacuation sites (HUNTARA I-III). They are deploying food, tarpaulins, water supply, and mobile clinics.
- *Other NGOs/Organizations: Implementing construction of temporary classrooms, psychological support, water distribution, and distribution of hygiene kits, mats, blankets, and tarpaulins.
- *A-PAD Indonesia: Conducting assessments for water and sanitation, and education, and distributing clean water.
