Although Indonesia is surrounded by beautiful seas and has many accommodations that are popular with tourists, the country is also prone to natural disasters such as tsunamis, storm surges, and earthquakes. Facilities including hotels and inns are responsible for protecting the lives of guests in the event of a disaster, and are required to have systems in place to do so.

A-PAD Indonesia has so far implemented a total of 194 disaster preparedness certification programs in four provinces that are often affected by tsunamis and storm surges (Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and West Java). A-PAD has supported hotels in various regions to obtain a disaster preparedness certification.

A distinctive feature of the certification program is that it creates tools (guidelines) that are tailored to the region and eventually allows local governments in each region to manage them. The guidelines list the procedures and objectives for obtaining certification and efforts are being made to create a system where the entire community can independently raise disaster preparedness awareness.

This special report, published for the first time, summarizes the disaster preparedness certification system initiatives that A-PAD Indonesia has been working on. The number of hotels that can respond appropriately in the event of a disaster is increasing, and A-PAD is working hard to ensure the safety of as many people as possible.

This project was implemented as part of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs NGO Collaboration Grant Aid Project.
