【A-PAD Bangladesh】Heavy Rains Emergency Response: Saving Lives Amid Floods

2025.07.04

In late May, Bangladesh was struck by heavy rains across Bagerhat, Cox’s Bazar, Patuakhali, Netrokona, Habiganj, Pabna, and Dhaka. Disaster response teams, in coordination with A-PAD Bangladesh, immediately launched an emergency response. Working closely with local volunteers, field staff prioritized saving lives and restoring vital transport links.

As floodwaters rapidly rose, our field staff, alongside trained community volunteers, sprang into action. They went door-to-door in the hardest-hit low-lying areas, using rescue boats and makeshift rafts to safely evacuate 37 residents, including elderly people and children, to higher ground or temporary shelters. Their swift response at the flood’s peak prevented any casualties.

At the same time, another team led road repair efforts. Equipped with chainsaws, ropes, and safety gear, volunteers and field staff worked tirelessly to clear fallen trees and mud that had obstructed main roads leading to health facilities and markets. Their swift action reopened two critical roads within just eight hours, allowing emergency medical services, supply trucks, and residents to travel safely.

This emergency response exemplified the successful pre-established partnership between the Disaster Management Committee, local government, and community volunteers, all coordinated by A-PAD Bangladesh. It not only strengthened community trust but also demonstrated the vital importance of local-level disaster preparedness.
