【A-PAD Bangladesh】 Rohingya Refugee Camp Fire Emergency Assistance

2021.03.26

Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh – On March 22, a massive fire destroyed over 10,000 buildings including shelters, mosques, and community centers. The cause of the fire has not yet been identified. The Bangladeshi government and aid agencies conducted rescue operations through the night and many refugees have been displaced. Fencing around the camp caused delays in rescue personnel accessing the scene and poor network connections have prevented people from contacting those inside the camp.

DCH Trust (Dhaka Community Hospital Trust) and CIS (Community Initiative Society), members of A-PAD Bangladesh, joined an emergency assistance team to conduct damage assessments of a primary health care center. The monsoon season is nearing in Bangladesh and rapid reconstruction of the refugee camp is crucial. At the primary health care center, the team is preparing to provide medical care, primary health care at a mobile clinic, and psychosocial support to the affected population. Relief items (waterproof tarpaulin, mosquito nets, flush lights, food, and drinking water) and COVID-19 prevention items (masks and hygiene kits) will be distributed.
