A-PAD Sri Lanka in partnership with the Civic Force of Japan has been coordinating the installment of Rainwater Harvesting systems in the Northern region of Sri Lanka for the past year. Starting with the pilot-project in Kayts Island in April 2015, the project has managed to equip the people of Jaffna with a much needed alternative to the issue of drinking water scarcity caused by a multitude of reasons, primarily long-term dry weather. Following the pilot project, 15 systems were handed over to beneficiaries in Thambatti, Karombon, Melinchimunai and Puliyangoodal Grama Niladhari Divisions.

In a more recent venture, 30 more systems were handed over to beneficiaries in Melinchimunai and Analaitivu regions on the 12^th and 13^th of May. The project team from Colombo and Jaffna were joined by the Assistant Director, Planning, Ms Vairamuttu Darshini and the Grama Sevaka Official of Melinchimunai, Mr R Johnson, for the handover in Melinchimunai on the 12^th Thursday. Other Divisional Secretariat officials too joined the team in both Melinchimunai as well as in Analaitivu where the handover took place on the 13^th Friday.

Beneficiaries have stated that the system, which functions as a storage system for government-provided bowser refills, has minimized the struggle of long distance travel to water points for the collection of water.
