【A-PAD Indonesia】 Deadly Earthquake Struck Eastern Region – Emergency Assistance Underway

On August 15, 2026, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Flores Island. According to the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) issued a temporary tsunami warning mainly in West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi provinces.

The affected communities extended to more than seven areas in East Nusa Tenggara province. A number of houses collapsed, at least 38 people were killed, 13 were injured, and approximately 2,000 people were evacuated. Medical facilities, schools, and government buildings were also damaged, and damage to passenger terminals, landslides, and rockfalls have caused transportation disruptions. The number of casualties still being confirmed and may increase further.

Temporary tents were set up for the evacuation of residents of Goro Mori village. Many people were unable to sleep indoors due to the fear of aftershocks.

The team on the ground has also begun needs assessments in Goro Mori village, West Manggarai Regency, where A-PAD Indonesia’s project is being implemented. A-PAD Indonesia plans to conduct further on-site surveys and emergency relief activities tailored to the needs of the affected area.
