A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Bohol in Central Philippines on the morning of October 15th. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, as of October 17th, 156 people have died, 374 have been injured, and 22 are still missing. More than 32,000 people are currently taking shelter at 61 evacuation centers. There are still several aftershocks as relief operations and damage assessments by government agencies are under way.

Massive destruction to property and infrastructures were reported in Bohol and nearby Cebu. Power lines and phone networks were down right after the earthquake. It has been reported that isolated communities in Bohol have been difficult to reach due to destroyed roads and bridges. Three landslide incidents were also reported in Cebu. Local authorities said the death toll could still climb, especially in worst-hit areas in Bohol, where roads and bridges are still not passable.

Alliance member Citizen’s Disaster Response Center (CDRC) has been coordinating with its regional center Cebu-Bohol Relief and Rehabilitation Center (CRRC) to assess the situation on the ground and to know what kind of urgent assistance might be needed. Meanwhile, CDRC has begun a donation drive, calling for housing repair materials, water and food.
